Classes

Four ways to arrive

Every class is suitable for beginners. Teachers offer options for every pose, and nobody minds if you spend the hour in child’s pose.

  • Slow Flow

Unhurried vinyasa that links breath and movement. Warming, steady, never rushed — a good first class.

    60 or 75 minAll levels
  • Yin

Long, supported floor poses held for three to five minutes to soften connective tissue and settle the nervous system.

Signature

Breathwork Circle

A guided 60-minute session of conscious breathing, lying down, with live cello on Friday evenings. We work with slow, extended exhales to downshift the nervous system — no hyperventilation, no forcing.

Teachers

Three teachers, one tempo

Between us we have taught for more than forty years. We know most of our regulars by name — and how they take their tea.

  • Dana Whitfield

    Founder · Yin & restorative

A former physical therapist who found yin after a back injury in 2009. Dana opened Soma in 2017 and still teaches the Sunday Restore herself.

“Rest is not a reward. It’s part of the practice.”
  • Marcus Reyes

    Breathwork & slow flow

Trained in breath-focused therapy and 500-hour vinyasa. Marcus leads the Breathwork Circle and the Friday cello evenings.

“Your exhale is the quickest way home.”
  • Talia Moreno

    Flow, mobility & beginners

Talia teaches our early mornings and the four-week Beginners Course. Patient, funny and very good with stiff hamstrings.

“Nobody is too inflexible for yoga. That’s why we do it.”

Your first visit

Nervous? Most people are.

  1. Message us or just turn up

Drop-ins are welcome if there’s space. Arrive 10–15 minutes early so we can say hello and ask about any injuries.

  2. Wear something comfortable

Soft clothes you can move in. We practice barefoot. Changing rooms, showers and lockers are on the left as you come in.

  3. Take whatever you need

Mats, blocks, bolsters and blankets are laid out by the door. The teacher will show you what to grab for each class.

  4. Stay for tea

After class there is always a pot of herbal tea on the bench. No rush to leave.

I’ve never done yoga. Which class should I pick?

Thursday’s Beginners Flow or any Restorative class. Our four-week Beginners Course starts on the first Monday of each month (4 × 75 min, $120).

Is breathwork safe for everyone?

Our breathwork is slow and gentle, but please let Marcus know before class if you are pregnant, have epilepsy, heart conditions or a history of panic attacks.

Is the studio accessible?

There is a lift to the 2nd floor and one step into the studio, with a ramp available. Bike parking is in the back courtyard; the Carroll Street F/G subway station is a four-minute walk.
